Hamlet 1998
Kenneth Branagh a stage and screen actor put on one of the most exciting and cinematic styles on the Bard's Hamlet to hit the screen in a long time. The play is beloved I think its been done in so many ways over the years but Branagh's take on the melancholy Dane is one of the best I've seen. Use of flashbacks are great and a slew of top rate actors.
Branagh, a Shakespeare trailed theatre actor has produced movies on some of the most famous ones, including Othello (Lawrence Fishburne) Much Ado About Nothing (Keanu Reeves, Denzel Washington), which with Hamlet & Romeo and Juliette are probably Shakespeare's most beloved. The movie was long but so spellbinding, the soliloquy in the room surrounded with mirrors was great. This is a double videocassette which tells the story without condensing many acts from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Kate Winslet in a very early role shows such promise then. Lovers of Shakespeare and even those not acquainted with him yet will find this a compelling film.
