cinema verite. Gonzo Cinema. Well, Hunter Thompson had talent. Maidstone was one of four movies directed and produced by acclaimed author Norman Mailer. Mailer, who died in 2007, only appeared in three, made between 1967 - 1970. Maidstone is the movie with the infamous hammer- and ear-biting fight between Mailer and Rip Torn.

To quote the New York Times, Mailer’s forays into film range from the curious to catastrophic. Maidstone has full frontal nudity and adult situations, but nothing not seen in today's film.

As an author and personality, Mailer truly was fascinating. He is featured on a 2002 PBS Masters series in an intriguing and challenging discussion and keen perception. Mailer's first novel was The Naked And The Dead, based on his experience as a young soldier during World War 2. One of the great authors of our generation, Mailer can perhaps be forgiven a bit of self-indulgence in film-making. See a scene from our YouTube upload here!
