At fifteen Pepper Fairchild is already an outcast in his post-Civil War Louisiana home town. Hapless witness to a murder, he finds his testimony shrugged off by his father and others in the town. Furthermore, Pepper discovers that he's a decided third wheel in a household that includes a nineteen-year-old stepmother! That leaves only one option: San Francisco and the Golden West; and for company cousin Calvin whose speech defect and artistic interest make him an outcast as well.

With hardly any cash and only a half-equipped photographer's traveling studio for transportation, Pepper and Calvin are a poor bet for making it through the frontier. Especially since they persist in picking up strays along the way and are stalked by the hometown villain.

What happens to Pepper, Calvin, and their motley passengers is as unexpected as it is entertaining.
