Wayne Divine loves Shelia Smith -- the beginning of a simple story old as time. But for Wayne, a confused and troubled young student, in conflict with his middle-class past and present, this yearning for a beautiful black girl, the object of his quest for love, is a source of torment.

This novel of today's disaffected and vulnerable youth rings new changes on the classic theme of starcrossed lovers. United in their battle against the confining suburban world of parents, teachers and things, Wayne and Shelia embark on an odyssey of mutual exploration, seeking their own particular freedom.

But while they flee the establishment in search of each other, they fight separate battles as victims of a society neither can accept. Shelia, born of a doctor-father who denies his rural Southern origins, strives desperately to achieve status as a member of her race who is both "cool and hip." Wayne, in turn, struggles to drown the "ancient numbing voices" of his white past which forbid and frustrate his attempt to cross the color barrier. As they plunge in flight to Chicago's underground bars, to a brush with the police, to a violent encounter on a lonely highway, Wayne suffers with his guilty but compelling need to know and love a girl who remains a stranger.

With his ear keenly attuned to the language, the concerns, the frustrations of the young, Gunard Solberg has written a poignant and vital novel that will appeal to every reader who has attempted to explore the feared unknown through love.
