Dr. Theo Sinclair enjoys his quiet, scholarly, and somewhat lonely life as a university lecturer.  Until his life is disrupted by Alice, a beautiful young American visitor who wants Sinclair to tell her about a crime he witnessed as a child -- a crime that ended in the hanging of her father nearly twenty years previously.

Duke Donovan had been a U.S. serviceman stationed in Somerset during the waning years of World War II.  He and another G.I. had enjoyed helping with the apple harvest to the cider farm where then-nine-year-old Sinclair had been evacuated from London.  The discovery of a human skull in a cider barrel led to Duke's arrest and murder conviction.  And Sinclair had been the principal witness for the prosecution.

Determined to find the truth about her father, Alice persuades the reluctant Sinclair to revisit the farm and track down the different people who took part in the apple-picking.  The horrors of the past take in a frightening immediacy when another murder is committed.

Peter Lovesey displays his mastery of the crime novel in creating an atmosphere of suspense that grips and tightens like the cider press itself.
