Eight Black Horses
An 87th Precinct Mystery

by Ed McBain
Publisher:  Arbor House
Copyright:  1985

Book Club Edition

The body of a young woman found shot in the park was naked, very naked; but a dead body was not too unusual for an autumn night in the 87th Precinct.

What was different about this body was the disturbing thought that it was in some way related to the series of odd missives received at the stationhouse.  Even more disturbing was the inescapable conclusion that the Deaf Man had returned, this time with a plot more diabolical than even the jaded stationhouse professionals could imagine.

What did the messages mean?  They were simply pictures of police equipment -- two nightsticks, three pairs of handcuffs, four police hats, five walkie talkies, eight black horses . . .

Steve Carella would be one of the first to find out, but not until he also discovered that the Deaf Man was impersonating him.  The discovery would come too late for another young woman whose path had crossed that of the Deaf Man, and it leads Carella, Meyer, Kling, and Brown to an insidious and lethal confrontation, a confrontation more explosive, more shocking, more surprising than any the cops of the 87th Precinct have ever experienced.

Eight Black Horses is the most inventive, tightest woven -- and sexiest -- 87th Precinct novel yet.  It is Ed McBain at his incomparable best.
