Bitter orange, also known as Seville orange, is a member of the citrus family. The entire fruit, including the peel, is used to collect the aromatic oil, which is used worldwide for various aromatic and flavoring purposes. Included in these purposes, bitter orange provides flavoring for various liquors, beer, teas and marmalades. It has even been used to flavor medicines while being used for herbal purposes in its own right. The fruit and peel contains the stimulant, synephrine. Bitter orange has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for asthma, digestive problems, weight loss and constipation. In recent years, it has become a common ingredient in weight loss, weight-lifting and energy supplements. While synephrine occurs to some degree in virtually all citrus products, significant consumption can cause cardiac problems.
