Opuntia engelmannii is a shrubby species with dense clumps that can grow up to 3.5 meters (11 feet) tall and usually have no discernible trunks. The pads are obovate to spherical, green (occasionally blue-green), 15â30 cm long, and 12â20 cm wide.
Fruits with purple flesh measure 3â7 cm.
The ovate-shaped pads may be anywhere between 6" and 12" wide. It requires very little water as it is drought-tolerant and can thrive in direct sunlight.
It produces beautiful flower clusters in the late spring that range in hue from yellow to peach. The purple fruit that grows from those blooms is important and can be eaten fresh or used to make jams, jellies, syrups, beverages, and a variety of other delectable food combinations!
