Secret Places (VHS)

Moving story of young girl's growing up in a rural England against the backdrop of World War II. Life is going on as usual one dreary winter, when the prim, proper students at the Albert Lodge School for Girls meet their new classmate, Laura. Quite exotic, Laura is regarded as an oddity and treated with resentment because she is both different and viewed as an enemy. Eventually Laura develops a friendship with Patience, a lonely girl with problems at home. Patience introduces Laura to her friends and to their "secret places"- a garden in summer and an ancient boiler room in winter. The reactions of the girls to Laura are mixed, and life for them all is complicated by such events as a German POW camp being built in the garden, by falling in love, and coping with the difficult realities of war. This film is a poignant tale of the difficult journey from youth to adulthood told with great warmth, compassion and sensitivity.
