Lava rock, the oldest stone in the world, is surrounded by meaning and symbolism. In Hawaii, legend says that Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes, punishes anyone who takes lava, pumice or shells from the beach with great misfortune until the materials are returned. In 19th-century Italy, cameos carved from lava rock were incredibly sought-after pieces of jewelry (and still are to this day). Lava is also said to have many metaphysical properties, bringing balance, passion, energy and detoxification. Lava gemstones are rather light weight. They have a unique amount of holes and are all usually different and very textured.
