Wouldn't it be fascinating to find out that your ancestors:

-- walked across the Bering Strait in prehistoric times?

-- attended Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee

-- helped storm the Bastille?

-- fought at the Little Big Horn?

More and more people are using their leisure time to find out who they are and where they came from.  Tracing Your Roots is a complete guide for the beginning genealogist.

You will soon learn that digging into your past is anything but a dull, boring process.  Creativity, imagination, and a sense of fun are the main requirements, as well as patience and perseverance.  If you've had visions of poring over huge, dusty volumes in tiny cubicles, you will be surprised to know that most of your time will be spent outside the library.

Tracing Your Roots explains why it is important to start with yourself in the search for your roots.  Such simple steps as collecting family members' names, family pictures, and other documents will get you off to a good start.  There are tips on how to organize your information into charts and worksheets, and several of these charts are included in the book.  Instructions on how to find and interpret wills, birth and death certificates, marriage records, and military records are also included.  The book explains how to use federal census records, another important source of information, and explains many of the unfamiliar terms which you may come across in legal documents.  Extensive biographies will lead you to other books on these specialized topics.

The obstacles and difficulties encountered in your search will probably challenge you to dig deeper, not get discouraged.  You will wonder through mazes of name changes -- both in people and places.  But if you maneuver your way out, you may discover something as exciting at this:

* In 1886 David Grun was born in Pionsk, Russia, (now Poland),

* In 1906 he lived in Palestine under the name of David Green.

* In 1973 he died in what was now called Israel, and his name was David Ben-Gurion.

Don't be surprised to learn that, in England, the dates March 8, 1730, and March 28, 1731. were only 20 days apart.  At that time the new year started in late March.

Since America is a nation of immigrants, there are valuable clues in ship passenger lists, immigration records, and naturalization papers.  You may learn that your ancestors arrived in the country at the port of Sandusky, Ohio; but if they came to San Francisco, no such records of their entry exist.

Even after you have collected all this information, you may not think you've gotten very far.  There are still other paths to take, such as:  read a book about the period and put yourself in your ancestor's place; take a trip to retrace your family's travels; or take pictures of all the local spots associated with your family.  The possibilities are unlimited.

A chapter on heraldry will teach you how to design your own coat of arms if your family does not have an authentic one.
