The Tunnels of Cu Chi re-creates a remarkable campaign in the Vietnam War, a unique battle fought inside a 200-mile labyrinth of underground tunnels and complex chambers that the Viet Cong dug just north of Saigon.  It also tells for the first time the story of America's unsung heroes who fought this war -- a small group of specially trained GIs known as tunnel rats, who volunteered to fight hand to hand, armed only with knives and pistols, against a dedicated and ingenious enemy inside the booby-trapped blackness of the tunnels.

These tunnels, often dug just beneath the feet of the Americans, became the Viet Cong's sanctuaries -- barracks, arms factories, theaters, and hospitals, all built into a triple-level maze of passageways with hidden trapdoors -- seemingly impregnable deep within the earth.  The tunnels of Cu Chi thwarted every attempt to occupy and hold this strategic area, despite weaponry such as earthquake-bombs, napalm, gas, phosphorous grenades, and chemical defoliants.  The tenacity and determination of the underground guerrillas earned the respect of their American enemies.  One American colonel, as he lay dying in Cu Chi after a tunnel shoot-out, described them as "those incredible men in the tunnels."

Here too are memorable portraits of many of the key figures in this drama:  of Vo Thi Mo, the tough and handsome girl guerrilla who unhesitatingly fought and killed Americans -- until something happened that made her spare some lives; of Flo Rivera, the little tunnel rat sargeant who broke all the rules to beat his squad into shape and keep them alive; of Pham Sang, the Viet Cong's propagandist-entertainer inside the tunnels; of Dr. Vo Hoang Le, the Viet Cong tunnel surgeon, who finally was forced to perform brain surgery and amputations using household drills and saws and no anesthetics; and of the fierce sergeant Batman, and Rat Sixm his new lieutenant, who vied for the leadership of their squad as they battled the Viet Cong inside the holes.
