"The air was filled with the sound of breaking glass and it seemed as though the furniture and the very walls themselves were exploding all around her.  Even as she watched, the top of the newel post on the stairs dissolved into matchwood and the large, ornate mirror on the opposite wall shattered into a million glittering shards that erupted forward like a blossoming of a terrible crystal flower . . . .  A second canister came through the shattered front door, this one striking the floor and then exploding with a roar into white hot flame, the shock wave smashed into her back like a huge fist, thrusting her into the room beyond." -- from The Tenth Crusade

From out of the past Heather Foxcroft suddenly re-enters Philip Kirkland's life, and then just as abruptly she disappears, her only trace a smear of blood on the wall of his Manhattan loft.  Kirkland knows he must find her.

His search leads him into the bizarre world of religious fanaticism and into the born-again fundamentalist movement's most violent offspring, the Tenth Crusade.  With the help of Sarah Logan, who has her own reasons for investigating the Crusade, Kirkland begins to unravel the complex threads of a grotesque conspiracy.  Under the guise of Christianity, and claiming moral and biblical sanction, the Crusade has infiltrated almost every level of government with a single, brutal objective -- totalitarian control.  As a wave of right-wing terrorism sweeps across America, Philip and Sarah are caught up in the rising tide of events and become pawns in a merciless power struggling from which there is no escape.
