Barbara Waugh, a literary agent in her early thirties, has suffered through the worst trauma a mother can endure:  years before, her young daughter Angela was kidnapped and murdered.  But now Barbara, in the midst of her busy workdays with authors and publishers, is getting plaintive calls.  "Mummy, help me . . . ." repeatedly entreats the caller, until Barbara realizes she is hearing Angela's voice.

Trying to find her daughter, she begins a search for the Nameless, the satanic, bestial people whom in Ramsey Campbell's chilling world of horror and the demonic, steal the young and turn them into monsters.

Her search leads Barbara into areas of evil she can barely endure.  "She sorted through the handful of photographs while her body twitched, desperate to turn away.  Several had been taken in California.  She remembered the group that one of Manson's women had described as worse than the Family . . . .  She was unconsciously crumpling the photographs when the crying commenced.  She hadn't yet looked in the cellar.  For a moment she was afraid she was going to faint, then she was running to the door.  She knew only that she had to save the child . . . ."

Ramsey Campbell has been hailed by such authors as Stephen King and Peter Straub as a master of horror fiction.  The Nameless can only add to these laurels.
