Gladys Brown Edwards' writing first appeared in the Arabian Horse World in the early 1960s, just a few years after the magazine was founded. In the years since her death in 1989, GBE kept us informed, entertained, amazed, and curious, and she became recognized as a worldwide authority on the breed.
Readers relied on the GEB perception of show, breeders and breeding programs, the efficacy of training methods, and individual animals. She was quick to praise the beautiful athlete and just as fast to discount the non-athletic horse; she was always ready to applaud a spectacular performance, particularly in the high-stepping divisions, quick to condemn a sloppy presentation. She revealed her low tolerance of poor conformation and inability to use those bones and muscles in a harmonious way.
For 25 years, GBE crusaded for correct terminology in the Arabian horse community. Mislabeling - whether through ignorance, arrogance, or lack of caring - sent her in a shiver of outrade. So, for this first in the series of GBE reruns, here is her treatise on Arabian horse terminology.
