How to Use, Grow and Buy Nature's Miracle Plants

SIXTH PRINTING

Where to begin is the hardest thing in learning about herbs.  It seems that the best anyone can hope for is an inviting spot along the vista that prompts a stop to study the herbal landscape.

The Rodale Herb Book is that inviting spot.  It is an enchanting guide to the herbal vista for the reader new to herbs.  But it also provides a new outlook for those already familiar with the herbal panorama.

You will read about the history, names and lore of herbs, about their medicinal values, their use in the kitchen pots and the dye pots, in the household and in the vegetable garden.  The emphasis is on how-to-do-it, so you will learn how you can put these plants to work in and around your home.  The contributors are all knowledgeable herbalists.

A major element of the book is an herbal encyclopedia with entries, ranging from several photographs to several pages, on more than 150 herbs.  The herbs covered run the gamut from the commonly known such as peppermint, thyme, sage and rosemary, to the oddly named mugwort and beebalm, with some plants not thought of as herbs such as horseradish, garlic and sunflowers.  Again, the emphasis is on how-to, but descriptions and lore are not neglected.  More than 50 of the most significant herbs are illustrated with unique identifying photographs.

Supplementing the text are photographs and line drawings, recipes, a companion planting chart, a dyeing chart and other how-to helps.  A short glossary of medical terms is included along with a bibliography and a useful listing of sources of seed, plants, dried herbs and herbal products.

Condition:  Used.  Hardcover.  Dust cover shows edge wear, small tears and discoloration.  Back dust cover at the top gas a half-inch tear near the spine.  Pages are tanning from age.
