Christmas has always been a special time of year to me, largely due to the music of the season. It’s a time for being with family and friends; socializing in general; and of course; enjoying great food. I decided to do the first Christmas album in 1983 as a way to take some Christmas carols back to the sound of their origins in the Renaissance. If I was going to do that, then I thought I should do some in a modern way…a MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER way. People in the music business said, “CHIP, you’re doing the wrong thing. Artists only do a Christmas album when they’re out of ideas, or have a contract to fulfill.” I said, “You know that “FRESH AIRE 5” album you’ve been wanting to sell? Well, you have to take this Christmas album, or you can’t have it.” I think we are all glad that they took it. It’s been six years (and two kids) since the third album. We usually hear the Christmas albums referred as the “the blue one,” “the brown one,” of “the white one.” I guess that makes this “the redone.” I’ve let all of you…the fans…pick the cuts since the second (the blue one) album. In getting requests from our web site, I noticed a lot of people asking for songs I’ve already done. That tells me one of two things: 1)Either you didn’t like the way I did it the first time, or 2) some of you don’t have the other three Christmas albums. If that’s the case, you might want to buy all 8 Fresh Aire’s first, then the other Christmas albumns. See…I am a salesman! I hope you enjoy this one. It’s the first time I have tried, at your suggestion doing a couple of songs of the season (“HALLELUJAH” and “THE DANCE OF THE SUGAR PLUM FAERIES”) and not just carols. If you like this one let me know and I’ll do some more. CHIP DAVIS. Released by DOTS AND LINES in 2001.
