The history of THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS. In 1979, a group of bank employees elected to provide Christmas gifts for some of the area’s needy children instead of exchanging gifts with each other. This spontaneous act of generosity was so rewarding, it was repeated the following year. And this was the beautiful beginning of THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS, the first such program of its kind in the State of Texas. Each year since, the program has continued to grow, as has the number of abused and neglected children needing to be remembered by Santa. These children have had their wishes fulfilled, as other bank employees, customers and members of the business community have joined in to provide gifts to those youngsters living in foster homes licensed by Child Protective Services. Throughout the banking industry’s economically distressed years of the late eighties and several changes in bank ownership, the program not only survived but continued to grow. Today, under the aegis of Bank One, Texas and the Texas Department of Human Services, THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS reaches across the entire State of Texas. Last year, more than 80,000 gifts were distributed statewide. What began as simple act of kindness by a few individuals many year ago has grown into a tradition of holiday giving, copied by many but excelled by none.
