The announcement stuns people throughout the world -- especially six who believe their own lives can be saved or changed by the news.  The word from the Vatican is that the Virgin Mary is returning to Lourdes this very year to perform another miracle cure.

Thousands of people are drawn to the grotto where the Virgin Mary first appeared before the young peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous in 1858.  Many have staked their own lives on The Reappearance.  But will the miracle in fact take place?

So begins Irving Wallace's most ingenious and compelling work since The Word, a sweeping novel about Lourdes and a miracle that holds the world enthralled.  Set against the background of the most popular pilgrimage site in the world -- and the often mysterious and surprising story of St. Bernadette herself -- The Miracle has everything we've come to expect of Irving Wallace at his best:  rich, authentic detail; intricate, fast-paced plotting; suspense; and vividly realized characters.

Wallace takes us to the extraordinary mix of true faith and commercial exploitation that is Lourdes today, from the curative baths to the shoddy tourist traps to the desperately hopeful pilgrims, waiting for a sign.

The cast is international:  Ken Clayton, the young American who abandons medical treatment for the chance of a miracle, and Amanda, his psychologist fiancee; Tikhanov, the ailing Russian premier-designate who must visit the grotto incognito or face exposure and inevitable ruin by the Kremlin; Hurtado, the Basque terrorist for whom the grotto becomes a symbol of repression; Liz Finch, the hard-bitten journalist who wants to "expose" Bernadette; Edith Moore, the bland Englishwoman whose cure has made her famous against her will; Kleinburg, the Jewish doctor asked to authenticate a miracle of another faith; Gisele, the ambitious French girl whose desire to escape Lourdes leads to blackmail and voilence.

The climax: a surprise twist that only Wallace could bring off.  The result: superb entertainment from a master storyteller.
