Asbach Gmbh (Asbach Ltd,) is located in the winemaking
town of Rudesheim, Germany on the Rhine River. They
make the German brandy Asbach-Uralt (Asbach-old age)
from distilled wine.
Asbach is the only distillery in the world with a chocolate
factory. They make various chocolates filled with brandy.
By law, the word 'Cognac' can only be used for French
distilled wine made in the Cognac region of France.
Hugo Asbach founded the company in 1892. Since he
could not sell his distilled wine as Cognac , he coined
the word 'brandy' to define his product.
The German word 'brand' translates to English 'fire'
Brandy or brandywine is derived from German 'weinbrand'
and Dutch 'brandewijn' meaning 'fire wine' or 'wine'
