A Cake Carrier was a kitchen item that every good housewife used frequently, both to store her homemade cakes and to transport them – to parties, pot luck dinners, bake sales, and so on. So most of these carriers also carry the signs of many years of loving use This one is marked Decoware on the bottom and dates to somewhere in the 1950s to 1970s age range. The Decoware line was made by the Continental Can Company in the 1950s. They made trays, cake tins, flour/sugar canisters, bread boxes, picnic baskets, wastepaper baskets and the like. All in a variety of patterns; flowers, fruit, wheat, stripes, plaid, stars and more fruit and flowers! The Continental Can Co was started in 1904, survived the Great Depression, went into government work during WWII and was a multi-million dollar business by the 1950s. It had major factories in New York and Chicago.
As near as I can determine from research, this " Hex Sign” means protection from all disease. The 6-pointed star on top of another star, signifies 12 months or all year-round. So--- not only is this carrier a handy item to have in your home, it comes with the added benefit of being a protection symbol as well! Pennsylvania Dutch people were actually Germans, who pained these designs onto their barns, carved them into furniture and hammered them into kitchen utensils. They may have originally been a form of folk magic, and were thought to bring luck, love and abundance, and ward off misfortune such as fire and lightning. In the 20th century, Hex signs became popular with tourists and local artists responded accordingly, creating the in myriad forms and colors.
This would be a great addition to a collection of Hex signs, or just to use in your own kitchen !

I sell many Vintage items—please remember that VINTAGE means the item is around 25+ years old, it has almost always been used by someone, and may have a few flaws….if you want something perfect, then please do not buy Vintage! I do my best to point these flaws out, but I may miss something occasionally, so please be kind. Please check all pictures closely. Remember, VINTAGE also means they are not making these anymore, and you are buying something unique ! !
Explanation of Handling Charges: I MAY occasionally need to add a handling charge of $1.00-$3.00 to your order, Thiscovers any NEW packing materials I must purchase, extra-large padded mailers, etc. (I do recycle as well as much as possible---boxes, mailers, and packing materials.) This also covers any outsize packaging for larger items. I am an individual seller, with a limited budget, so I seldom offer free shipping other than for shoes, or other smaller, more expensive items.
