Tall conifer, the European silver fir has deep green needles with a silvery underside that was traditionally used as a Christmas tree before other North American fir species were favored. Upright in shape with a pyramid-like upper canopy that becomes flattened with great age, this very tall tree is native to southern Europe's mountains, from the Pyrennes eastward across the Alps and into the Caucusus. The smooth gray bark will eventually crack into plates.
Needles growing in shade are held out horizontally on the twigs, while those in direct sunlight are held erect. Glossy dark green, the needle undersides are a marked gray or silver. The smaller male cones are pinkish blue-violet while the large, cylinder-like female cones are yellow-green before ripening to sienna.
Grow European silver fir in full sun to partial shade in a non-alkaline soil that is fertile, moist and well-draining. In more shade the tree attains a more irregular, weeping branch habit. Use it as a large specimen tree for a park or campus. Selection 'Pyramidalis' is a denser form that has a more geometric, narrow pyramid shape that is better suited for more manicured garden settings. (source: learn2grow.com)
