This handsome coastal pine offers a diverse open headed form at maturity that is more sculptural than other similar species. This is an Asian pine found over a huge range from mainland China to Japan and Korea. In Japan it is an important part of the traditional garden. Unlike the American pines, this tree does not share much drought resistance and prefers moderate temperatures and regular rainfall. Coastal origin does make it stand well against persistent ocean winds.
The foliage of this pine bears its needles in twos, and exhibits unique yellow coloring during the cold winter months. Overwatering can also cause the same result. Green returns promptly as days lengthen in spring. Small light brown cones are produced with little ornamental value. In the landscape trade, multiple trunk forms are preferred over the single tall forest form. They can be pruned in youth in the Asian style to take on more sculptural forms. If grown on the coast they are naturally shaped by the wind, which can result in attractive long lived specimens.
