Smokebush is a medium-sized, deciduous shrub to small tree that is native to regions from southern Europe to eastern China. Its rounded medium blue-green leaves turn yellow, orange or red in the fall. Some cultivars even sport attractive gold, purple or burgundy foliage. In summer, large panicles of inconspicuous flowers appear followed by long, curled, densely-packed, hair-like fruits that look like large puffs of smoke. These are highly ornamental and may be gray-green, pink, dusty-rose or purple in color.
Smokebush prefers sites with moderately fertile, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It may be used in shrub borders or as a specimen plant. (source: learn2grow.com)
