On Hold GREENFIELD NH 1956 Country Flavor Cookbook SIGNED Haydn Pearson Recipes Essays Cookery Book

Titled COUNTRY FLAVOR COOKBOOK ... 115 Recipes 70 Country Flavor Essays, authored and SIGNED by Haydn S Pearson, Sunny Acres, Greenfield, Hillsborough County, NH New Hampshire, stated copyright 1956 by author, revised edition per front cover. Plastic spiral binding softcover weighs a solid 1 pound 1 ounce, measures approx 6-3/4” x 9” x 3/4” thick with 236 pages plus Index, and includes a loose-leaf insert of 3 bw photographs (see image). Unique to this cookbook, and instead of a typical Table of Contents, author has selected recipes with their page numbers and titled the page I Hope You Will Try! Signed and inscribed inside front cover: The best of life’s flavor - Haydn S Pearson (see image). This is truly a special recipe book and extraordinary read!

According to Wikipedia, the Greenfield NH population was 1,749 at the 2010 census, so few people resided there in the 1950s, and no wonder this country recipe cookbook reads like a comfy talk between friends, sharing recipes and memories, across the rural kitchen table. A charming cookery and recipe book ... a collection of brief essays on country living, from milking and Saturday nights, to woodsheds and apple butter.

Quoted from Kirkus’ Review: At intervals Haydn Pearson has shared the delights of country living in books-sometimes practical ""how to"" books (Successful Part-Time Farming) -- sometimes regional (New England Flavor). Now he has combined the regional flavor with the practical in a cookbook that has brought together the foods he grew up on, with the refinements-should we say- that modern knowhow has afforded. His reluctant sisters put up with his being underfoot, since he was going to write about cooking, and the result is a practical, down-to-earth New England cookbook, which appropriately enough, starts off with cookies and cakes, pies and puddings -- and then goes back to stews, soups and chowders and on through a miscellany of a little bit of everything. Sandwiched in between the recipes are brief essays on such varied topics as rocking chairs, fall colors, grist mills, the country telephone, box suppers, the seed catalogues, peepers in the spring, etc.etc. For special tastes.
