Quoted From DJ:

The inflationary spiral that affected clothing, housing, and education, has hit everyone ... where they eat. Food costs are rising so rapidly and exorbitantly that the situation has become a nationwide crisis. (and now, 38 years later, we are living ... no, existing with ... inflation yet again!)

However, Gloria Stern, a conscientious homemaker, has found a viable solution - through cooperative buying - and HOW TO START YOUR OWN FOOD CO-OP offers an effective and practical guide to buying quality food at reasonable prices.

Ms Stern answers basic consumer questions about food co-ops. How does the private individual organize a co-op? Where can the homemaker find one? Does a co-op really achieve significant savings? What are the areas in which it can save most?

She explains the various types of food and beverage cooperatives and details the steps involved in getting one started. Such basic and essential considerations as the initial organization and management of a co-op, problems which are most likely to arise, and the distribution of work duties and wholesale goods among members, are dealt with in depth.

The author also provides the co-op consumer with a complete guide to wholesale buying, listing the wholesale sources of such items as produce, health foods, and cheeses. And, because wines and meats are the two most expensive and most inflationary items on the average grocery list, she devotes a separate chapter to each. She tells how to buy quality wine in quantity and gives pointers on how to identify grades of meats, how to determine the amount of waste in each cut, and when to shop for the best buys.

For those who do not have a temperament for fasting, it may be time to join or start a food co-op. And HOW TO START YOUR OWN FOOD CO-OP is a vital way to begin."
