" The experiments were conducted, at first, in the basement of Colombia University. The subject was placed in a vertical tank which looked very much like a boiler. All sensory stimuli were cut off, leaving the subject floating in the dark for several hours. All but two of the 23 subjects found it exhilirating and a number of them hallucinated. Then one Saturday afternoon in April 1957, the head of the project, Dr. Eddie Jessup decided to try it himself.
And so begins a journey into a terrifying unknown, an odyssey that takes Eddie Jessup (William Hurt) to the very recesses of his mind, further and further back to the wrenching beginnings of mankind itself. Altered States grips you in the very first scenes and doesn't let go until its sensory-barraging climax. It's a dazzling sight and sound show about a brilliant, obsessed scientist who, after losing his faith in God, attempts to find his own true self.
