The Story of the
GRATEFUL DEAD
  • Hardback book with Dust Jacket by Adrian Hall

" The most successful band to come out of the San Francisco rock scene on the 1960s, the Grateful Dead have delighted generations of "Dead Heads" with their unique sound and style. "

" The Story of the Grateful Dead explores how the Dead came to inspire the enthusiastic following they enjoyed for three decades.
From Bay Area jug band to international phenomenon, the Grateful Dead's success story can best be measured not by awards and accolades, but by their influence on successive generations of listeners.
Although the scope of their popularity has widened, their core group of fans has, over the years, made being a Dead Head a lifestyle.
A special "taper's section" at concerts allows every show to be recorded by fans whose tape collections are prized possessions;
song lists for every show are compiled and shared by fans, with notations made for the first performance of a song, the first time a song has been played in many years, and so on. "

" Unlike nearly every other band, the Grateful Dead never perform exactly the same concert twice.
Songs from the band's early days are mixed with new numbers, and the length of each songs and how it is played varies with each and every performance.
The combination of experimentation and surprise makes every Grateful Dead concert an adventure;
but even this is not enough to explain the effect this unglamorous collection of musicians has had on so many people all over the world. "

" The Story of the Grateful Dead follows the band from its origins at Bay Area "acid tests" with keyboardist and vocalist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan;
through the 1970s with vocalist Donna Godchaux and keyboardist Keith Godchaux;
through the 1980s with keyboardist Brent Mydland;
to the death of lead guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and band leader Jerry Garcia on August 9, 1995,
leaving band members Bob Weir (guitar), Phil Lesh (bass), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Mickey Hart (drums), and Vince Welnick (keyboards) to consider the future of the band.
Including many rare and previously unpublished photos of the Dead throughout their career and a remarkably detailed recording and performance history, this book will thrill both Dead Heads and music buffs of all descriptions. "
