The first three chapters develop the reasoning behind these significant experiments.
Later chapters explore in detail the strategies and shapes the experiments have taken.

This book deals openly and honestly with the failures of the church, but offers new possibilities of change for other communities of faith. It will meet the definite need of many churchmen for a reason to remain with present institutional structures despite evident contradictions and perversions of those structures.

Some of these experiments have been successfully repeated elsewhere.
But the chief purpose of this book, says the author, is to say to other congregations: "Welcome to the laboratory, the rewards are worth the risks." "
