The Great Tradition
This novel, which reveals the clash between the American and European ways of life, tells the story of Hans Christian, Faith Marlowe's son. Hans has been brought up as an American but secretly yearns to go back to Germany, for he remembers his happy childhood there before his father, a German aristocrat, was killed in World War I. In 1924, when he is eighteen years old, his longing becomes a reality, but his disillusionment as he becomes involved in the fury of the Third Reich is quick and cruel.
