The First Directive is intense drama:  a taut, authentic first novel set in the starkly contrasting worlds of a California's "Silicon Valley" computer fortunes and festering ghettos.

Out in Silicon Valley the microchips grow as quietly as the piles of money being made by the high-tech new rich.  And Adolph Stone is as rich as any of them.  He's also a slumlord and a friend of the lieutenant governor.  So when his beautiful 16-year-old daughter is missing, Sergeant Fraleigh of the homicide squad and his team (the Block, the human equivalent of a tank, and Detective English, who looks like Robert Redford and suffers from bad dreams about Vietnam) are called into action.

The events that unfold in this tense and relentless suspenseful novel are worse than any nightmare.  Fraleigh finds himself ensnarled in a network of relationships built on dirty money and dirty secrets, a network that reaches to the top at the state capitol and deep inside Fraleigh's own police department.  Filled with the sights and colors of Northern California, this enthralling story is punctuated with sudden violence and a complex and deadly love affair.

Sometimes a novel foreshadows real life.  Many of the fictional elements in this story have, in the months before publication (and long after the novel was written), led to major stories in the national press and on television.

The First Directive is one of the most authentic, powerful novels of suspense in this -- or any other -- season.
