Room Outside, a new approach to garden design
by John Brookes

Publisher:  The Viking Press
Copyright:  1970

Second Printing

On these pages a garden is looked at from an entirely contemporary point of view -- as an extension to the house, a room outdoors for use as an alternate living room, dining room, or recreation room.  Whereas walls, doors, and windows define the rooms inside, plants, shrubs, trees, and fencing provide privacy and a colorful background for the myriad activities families enjoy in the open air.  The author's introduction traces the development of the enclosed garden from the earliest times to the present day, showing how the form was modified to suit various needs and conditions.  John Brookes then shows the reader how to plan his own outdoor space in relation to what use he wants to make of it and to the amount of time, upkeep, and expense he is able to give it.  Types of enclosure, paving, and suitable planting are discussed, as well as the means of relating them to each other in one overall design.  The use of water, types of furniture, lighting, and tubs and pots are among the many other things reviewed.  Throughout the book, good design, simplicity, economy, and easy maintenance are stressed.

The book is fully illustrated with photographs giving ideas for all types of gardens in different climates.  Every example shown is actually lived in; there are no set-ups or fakes.  Other photographs and diagrams accompany valuable do-it-yourself instructions on wall building, paving, and planting.

The book fills a great need in furnishing an intelligent, practical guide to everyone who would like to make his outside space the most interesting and enjoyable room on his property.

450 photographs, diagrams and plans, including 8 plates in color.
