First Edition

A novel about the true adventures of two men in search of the lost Maya Kingdom.

The jungle-covered Maya ceremonial centers have been a source of mystery and awe to all who have seen them, from the first European explorers to the tourists of today.

The remarkable Maya civilization rose and crumbled long before before the Spanish invasion in the sixteenth century.  Since that time the remains of the magnificent Maya world have been slowly discovered.  The dramatic beginning of that adventure was when a young American attorney and his British sidekick, a gifted architect and artist, became intrigued by rumors of great cities lost in the deepest jungles.  John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood journeyed by steamboat and mule through the green hell of Central America, where almost by chance they stumbled upon a civilization so utterly forgotten by Indians and white men alike that it had no name.

The historic journey of Stephens and Catherwood is the basis of Journey to the Sky, a saga of high adventure and discovery that will invite comparison with The Man Who Would Be King.

Their journey was also an exploration of another kind -- for it represented the first glimpses of an America far less savage and rudimentary than white people imagined, and the beginnings of recognition that the word "civilization" is not reserved solely for the technological worlds of Europe and Asia.

A richly entertaining and intensely human tale, Journey to the Sky is also a story of historical significance.
