Luis Mendoza makes his thirty-seventh appearance in Dell Shannon's widely praised, extremely popular detective series.  Blood Count will have Mendoza's loyal fans cheering as loudly as ever, as he and his colleagues on the Los Angeles Police Department are once again confronted with a barrage of crimes ranging from the petty to the passionate.

It's been a rainy week in L.A., and among the tasks Mendoza and company face are tracing a couple who may have murdered their unwanted newborn infant. and investigating a possible case of husband-beating.  There's a string of hit-and-run accidents in which the offending vehicle is a Model A Ford, and the peculiar case of a mugger who's as greedy for his victim's shoes as for their cash.  The most puzzling crime of all is the murder of a respectable middle-aged woman from Indianapolis, because no one seems to know why she was in L.A. or who she was with when she died.  Could the killer have been an old college flame?  He's the best available candidate, but Mendoza's not so sure . . .

So the men and women of the Robbert and Homicide Division start in on the cases, but meanwhile new ones continue to pour in, stretching their resources to the limit.  Of course nothing is ever quite what it seems and the investigations go in surprising directions.  As always, Dell Shannon spices the detection with insights into the poignant human side of police work, and the arrival of a baby daughter in the Mendoza household (and some family squabbling over a nickname) provides a delightful counterpoint to the high-voltage tension of the unending battle against big-city crime.
