Book Club Edition?

This striking pictorial book traces the rise of the Kennedy family from their immigrant Irish forebears to the American Presidency.  In text and photographs by Jacques Lowe, official campaign photographer for John F. Kennedy, it portrays the route the family has traveled since leaving a thatch-roofed cottage in County Wexford.  There was an ocean crossing in steerage, eventual political power and wealth waiting for them in Boston, and finally in the third generation, occupancy of the most famous mansion in the country.

As an historical document, Portrait is without parallel.  It captures the spirit of a young man becoming the President of the United States with brilliance and excitement, in an eloquent visual adventure by a truly gifted photographer.

Through pictures and prose, Mr. Lowe focuses on the exuberant Kennedy family today, not only showing their roles in the ascendancy of our thirty-fifth President, but most graphically catching their thoughts, their emotions, and their tremendous vitality in the midst of the drama that has surrounded them.  It is Mr. Lowe's camera that records the primaries and the electrifying events at the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles, catching the spontaneous floor demonstrations, the excitement, and the drama behind the scenes.  Since he was later to be in the President's box during the Inauguration Day Parade, Lowe was the only photographer on the pre-Convention campaign plane, and with Portrait he shares his revealing, often moving glimpses of the candidate, his staff, and his family, in action.
