The Ten Building, an apartment house, is in Los Angeles.  It could exist in any city in the world.  Beneath the outer normalcy of its tenants, there is iiner seething -- a desperate struggle to escape the entrapment of circumstances.

Bunny is the bride of one year who has yet to experience fulfillment.  Mrs. Smith draws on fantasies as a substitute for love.  Janice Grace, her passions frozen in an obsessive game, cannot decide between men and women.  Katharine Prince, a young widow, finds that compromise affairs do not give her the inner satisfaction she needs so desperately.  Myra Roberts, her husband stricken with partial paralysis, still demands a vital and complete woman's life.  Gerry Carter, the divorcee with a teenage son, plays dangerous games that cannot be fulfilled with alcohol, sleeping pills, and seductions.  Sadie Berman, a 250-pound captive of a passion for food, is afraid of being a woman.  Denise Crane plays a submissive role to her domineering and sadistic husband.  Miss Alice Bailey, an elderly English spinster, lives her life remembering passions of another era, passions as urgent and tumultuous as those of any of the other Daughters of Longing.

All these women are due to undergo sudden and violent changes in their lives, their outlooks, their relationships to each other -- and to their lovers.  The changes begin when a lovely Eurasian whore, Lotus Lin, and her lover, a handsome male prostitute, move into the Ten Building.  Lotus Lin's exuberant -- sometimes defiant -- lust for life, the noisy fusion f her activities with her lover, and her striving toward her own unique goals are so intense and pervasive that all the women in The Ten Building find their private and secret longings brought forcibly to the surface.

Lotus Lin leaves her mark on all.  She is a whore with a dream.
