Springtime 1965.  In Washington, a two-day military parade and gala proclaim the Union triumph.  In Richmond, smoldering ruins testify to the Confederate defeat.  The Civil War is over, but there is no peace.

Winds of change sweep across the land.  The industrial North, its strength turned to commerce, has little compassion for the vanquished.  The embittered South, shackled by occupation, conspires against the vengeful victor.  The West, ripe with riches, faces the fury of Indian wars which, on both sides, grow more atrocious.  Everywhere freedom for blacks is subverted or exploited.  Everywhere public officials foster corruption on an unrivaled scale.

Upon this panorama, vividly realized and impeccably researched, John Jakes continues the saga of two American families, the Mains of South Carolina and the Hazards of Pennsylvania.  Interweaving intense, searing personal adventures with historic events, he conjures a stunning array of contrasts -- from the elegance of an exclusive club to a squalid frontier bordello, from the ceremonial impeachment of President Johnson to the blood bath of the Washita Massacre, from the tenderness of a love affair to the terror tactics of the Ku Klux Klan.

Heaven and Hell is a portrait of individuals in crisis and the aftermath of war.  It is, by turns, hard-bitten, romantic, violent, bawdy, gentle, comic, lyrical, haunting.  Its pace is swift, its story irresistible.

Condition:  Used.  Hardcover.  Dust cover shows light discoloration and a bit of shelf wear.  There's scuffing on the dust cover and the back of the dust cover has creases and a couple of 1-inch tears at the top.  Pages are tanned from age.  Binding is in the beginning stages of splitting in places throughout the book, but pages are in tact.
