A novel about a crippled athlete and the laboratory monkey who learns to do his will.

A great collegiate athlete is crippled in a motorcycle crash leaving him even without the motor skills to kill himself. His salvation comes from a wholly unsuspected source: a diminutive capuchin monkey, with bright, eager eyes and a cowl of golden fur around her face. Ella. As in the medical shock novels of Michael Crichton and Robin Cook, the experimental world of advanced, medical research gives the book its flavor. The crippled man's Oxford don in the animal research laboratory has found a way, he believes, to increase primate intelligence, and perhaps Ella can become the cripple's arms and legs. What the scientist does not foresee is that Ella's experimentally-induced modifications will enable her to form a link with the cripple's soul. The relationship between man and monkey, at first hesitant and irritating, becomes trusting. With the trust comes dependence, and curious, interlocking bonds, which turn into something infinitely more dark and dangerous, as the boundaries between human and animal behavior are crossed and re-crossed in a series of violent events that lead up to a horrifying climax.

While Monkey Shines depends on Michael Stewart's manipulation of state-of-the-art behavior modification techniques, the novel is essentially exalted by his comprehension of human hopes and misery, and a writing style that lifts this thriller into the realm of art.
