"The Skull Beneath the Skin takes Cordelia on a mysterious mission to an island castle off the coast of Dorset, where a private performance of Webster's blood-curdling tragedy of The Duchess of Malfi is being staged by the eccentric owner, Ambrose Gorringe, who also collects memento mori artifacts: skulls, Victorian funeral announcements, mourning regalia, and the like. The star of the production, Clarissa Lisle, a faded actress gambling the future of her career on this one performance, has been receiving increasingly malicious death notes--anonymous quotations from Shakespeare about death. Cordelia is hired to accompany Clarissa to the island and to serve as her bodyguard--but against whom? It soon becomes evident that virtually everyone invited to join the house party has an excellent motive for sending the death messages--and perhaps for murder. Before the curtain rises on Webster's play, one of the party will fall victim."
