THE GREAT STONE OF SARDIS by Frank R. Stockton. Published in New York and London by Harper and Bros., 1898. Hardbound First Edition. No dust jacket as issued. A classic of science fiction. This work had originally appeared as a serial in "Harpers Magazine." 8vo. Measures 5x7. Original green cloth with brightly-illustrated front cover with argent, brown and gilt. Very light bumping to corners. Very light scuff at top/bottom of spine, no loosening of any text pages. Age-toning throughout but clean, tight and unmarked except for 1" penciled "First Edition" on front blank end page above brief gift inscription to "Harry C. Walker, Xmas (18)98." Overall Condition Very Good/Very Good+. Includes 52 plates with illustrations by Peter Newell--these plates were "inserted" using special papers and only 3 of the 52 graphics are now loose in book. Spine panel is stamped in gold and is slightly sunned though all lettering clearly visible.
