The Union of Myanmar was formerly known as BURMA.

Myanmar is bordered by China on the north, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, India on the northwest, the Andaman Sea to the south, and the Bay of Bengal to the southwest.

Myanmar means "myan= swift", and "ma=strong".

In the late 1200s, Mongols under Kublai Khan invaded Burma.

By 1364 the Burmans re-established their kingdom, and Burmese culture entered a golden age.

In the Anglo-Burmese Wars (1824–1826, 1851–1852 and 1885–1886), Burma became a province of British India.

During World War II, Burma was a major front in the Southeast Asian theatre. After initial success by the Japanese in the Burma Campaign, during which the British were expelled from most of Burma, the Allies retaliated. By July 1945 they had retaken the country.

In 1962, a military coup d'état was led by General Ne Win. He ruled Burma for nearly 26 years.

In 1989, Burma became the "Union of Myanmar".

In 1990, free elections were held for the first time in almost 30 years.
