Heaven Has No Favorites is the story of a strange and desperate gamble with death, of a surprising discovery of love, and of the unpredictable ironies of chance. Erich Maria Remarque's romantic and haunting new novel deals with life lived with an intensity of the relentless running of the sands of time.

The woman is Lillian, beautiful, very young, yearning to be free, eager for the experiences denied her during three years in a sanatorium. This man is Clerfayt, mature, restless, and a professional racing driver in the perilous trade he has chosen to follow since the end of the war. A chance meeting between these two sets in motion a startling train of events, beginning with Lillian's defiant escape into the sweep and gaiety of continental life.

The drama that follows involves, besides the lovers, a dozen other sharply etched men and lovers, diverse in personality and background. It is played out swiftly through a spring and summer -- in Paris, Sicily, Venice, the Riviera. The shadow from which Lillian cannot escape and the sense that Clerfayt is pressing the odds toward disaster give the whole novel an extraordinary tension. Masterfully compounded of exciting action, subtle irony, and romantic poignancies, Heaven Has No Favorites casts an irresistible spell that holds the reader to the very conclusion -- and beyond. For Remarque has woven mor than a story; he has fashioned a fabric of love and loss, of vainglory and victory, in which to some degree we all are clothed. Here, indeed, is a thoroughly absorbing and satisfying reading experience.
