On a hot June morning in 1975, a fatal shoot-out took place between FBI agents and American Indians on a remote property near Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in which an Indian and two federal agents were killed.  Eventually, four members of AIM, the American Indian Movement, were indicted on murder charges in the deaths of the two agents.  Leonard Peltier, the only one to be convicted, is now serving consecutive life sentences in  federal penitentiary.

Behind this violent chain of events lie issues of great complexity and profound historical resonance, brilliantly explicated by Peter Matthiessen in this controversial book.  Why did the U.S. government, and the FBI in particular, "target" and subvert AIM in the first place?  Why did it throw so much military firepower into the battle on Pine Ridge Reservation and so much prosecutorial zeal into its aftermath?  In a comprehensive history of the desperate Indian efforts to maintain their traditions, Matthiessen reveals the larger issues behind the shoot-out, including the Lakota Indians' historical struggle with the U.S. government, from Red Cloud's War and Little Big Horn in he nineteenth century to the shameful discrimination that led to the new Indian wars of the 1970s.

This powerful book -- kept off the shelves for eight years because of one of the most protracted and bitterly fought legal cases in publishing history -- makes clear why the traditional Indian concept of the sacred inviolability of the earth is so important, all the more so as increasing populations destroy the precious resources of our world.

In a epilogue to this edition, the author presents startling new evidence supporting Peltier's repeated claims of innocence and argues persuasively that at the very least he deserves a new -- and fair -- trial.  And attorney Martin Garbus contributes a new afterword, chronicling the legal battle to block the book's publication.
