When British businessman Michael Holly agrees to carry a small, sealed package into Russia as part of a routine business trip, he is only remotely aware that the consequences of carrying the parcel might affect him in the most drastic way,  When he is caught, there is lottle that British intelligence can do except arrange to trade his life for that of a Soviet spy.  And, when the exchange fails, Holly finds himself being sent to a brutal labor camp in the Siberian wasteland.

Alone, the only foreigner among seven hundred hardened Russian prisoners, Holly is an unexpected element in the closed, rigidly-structured prison community.  Although Holly does not set out to mobilize the camp, he is unable to succumb to the listlessness and despair that is the other prisoners' fate.  He keeps his own counsel and prepares himself to resist and, if possible, to escape.  He comes to realize that resignation, even suicide, is surrender; and surrender is not an option for Michael Holly.  His strength lies in his ability to focus his anger and fear; it is this strength that leads him to individual acts of courage, defying the authorities in ways the other prisoners could hardly comprehend.  His indomitable spirit imbues the camp and acts as a catalyst to throw the entire compound into an organized spirit of defiance -- the only weapon against which the administration has no defense.

ArchAngel is both a classic tale of suspense and a complex psychological drma about human beings under extremes of stress.  The drama focuses not only on Holly himself, but on others imprisoned with him, especially one woman, Morozova, who bears witness to Holly's courage, and on the British agent responsible for sending Holly on the mission that failed -- a man haunted by his actions, and obsessed by the need to redeem himself.  Counterpoint to Holly's plight is that of the Soviet administrators, the political commanders who play the game of politics with human lives as pawns.  In ArchAngel, Gerald Seymour probes in depth, and within the framework of a taut, crackling thriller, the length a man will go -- and at what personal risk -- to allow his spirit to survive.
