In a 1985 cover article about Elmore Leonard, Newsweek called him "the best American writer of crime fiction alive, possibly the best we've ever had."  Now, in a novel that is less about crime than innocence, the author of Glitz and Bandits proves even that praise was too limited.

Touch takes place in and around Detroit, where a few people are beginning to suspect that an otherwise quite ordinary young man has a miraculous power to heal.  One of them knows there's a lot of money to be made with a miracle worker, genuine or not.  Another is more interested in power -- the power a modern saint would give him within the Church.  The trouble is, the young man simply won't conform to anyone's preconceived ideas about how a saint or a healer should behave.

"I had a good time writing Touch," Elmore Leonard writes in his introduction, "imagining mystical things happening to an ordinary person in a contemporary setting.  It's way off-trail compared to what I usually write, but it shouldn't be mystifying unless you look for symbols, hidden meanings.  Touch is about accepting what is.  Abiding with the facts.  Nothing more."

If the theme of Touch is different, the quintessential Leonard toughness remains -- along with the wonderfully quirky characters and classic dialogue that have become his hallmarks.  This is perhaps Leonard's most moving and erotic love story.  But as it races toward a violent and unexpected climax, it achieves the same suspense millions of readers have come to expect in his crime novels.

Touch is a remarkable achievement.  It makes clear that Elmore Leonard is not only our "best writer of crime fiction," but one of the best American novelists writing today.
