Lagniappe on the Bayou, a former festival held on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chauvin ended 16 years ago at the behest of the former bishop. But the memory and ardent love for the festival lives on in locals, even as new celebrations have been spawned with the ambition of replacing it.
The festival got started to raise money for St. Joseph Catholic School in Chauvin when the church was deeply in debt, said Sou Lirette, chairman of the festival for 25 years. But even after the school closed, the festival had become so popular that it took on a life of its own.
“Nobody can forget it because it was great, it was wonderful, it was authentically Cajun,” said Msgr. Frederic Brunet, pastor of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a fixture at the festival. “The music, the food, the different types of entertainment. The booths were decorated with palmetto leaves, and it just had that country music. The crowd was joyful, the workers were joyful. All that was fantastic.”
