item note: FIRST EDITION HARDCOVER 2 VOL SET OF THIS INCREDIBLY ILLUSTRATED CONFEDERATE TOME! PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF U. S. GRANT IN TWO VOLUMES, PUBLISHED BY CHARLES L. WEBSTER & COMPANY, 1885. VERY NICE SET OF THIS SOUGHT-AFTER PUBLICATION! The books are approx 6 1/2 by 9 1/2 & run 584 & 647, respectively. Volume II has an errata page to Vol I bound in at the end. Volume II was printed in 1886. Looking at the pictures that the boards are rubbed, tops & bottoms of the spine are bumped. Published by Charles L. Webster & Co., the publishing company owned by Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain. You can see where there is foxing to the closed edges of the book. Vol. I the front board is starting to separate from the binding. Boards have surface wear likely from more than a century of shelving and reading. The rear board appears to have been repaired sometime in the books life. Page block is tight and complete. No marking on the page block what-so-ever! Vol. II Is still bound tight. Boards have surface wear likely from more than a century of shelving and reading. The lower page edge corner has a faint moisture stain. Page block is tight and complete.
