item note: FIRST EDITION LEATHER BOUND HARDCOVER 2 VOL SET OF THIS INCREDIBLY ILLUSTRATED CONFEDERATE TOME! PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF U. S. GRANT IN TWO VOLUMES, PUBLISHED BY CHARLES L. WEBSTER & COMPANY, 1885. VERY NICE SET OF THIS SOUGHT-AFTER PUBLICATION! Leather bound editions of this set are becoming more and more difficult to find these days. The books are approx 6 1/2 by 9 1/2 & run 584 & 647, respectively. Volume II has an errata page to Vol I bound in at the end. Volume II was printed in 1886. The boards are rubbed, tops & bottoms of the spine are bumped. Leather has scratches and wear . Nice Raised ribbed spines with Red leather name plates and Black leather Volume plates. Marbled page edges. Nice marbled paste downs and end papers. Published by Charles L. Webster & Co., the publishing company owned by Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain. You can see where there is some minor foxing to the closed edges of the book. Vol. I Boards are in real great shape with corner and surface wear on the leather and light bumping to the boards. Rear board has a 1 inch area at the top edge that has started to separate or crack. Page block is tight and complete. No marking on the page block what-so-ever! Vol. II Leather has surface and corner/edge wear. Rear board has a 3 inch area at the top edge that has started to separate or crack. the rear end paper and paste down have been split.
