Offered here is this monotype linocut, unique in color arrangement and entitled "Magical Performance," the work was executed by one of Africa's most important graphic artists in modernism, Yinka Adeyemi.
The work is signed, titled and dated 1971 all in pencil in the margin area just beneath the printed image which measures 21 x 15 inches, and the paper sheet being (approximately), 23 x 18 inches. It is mounted in a very heavy Aluminum gallery presentation frame that measures 23-1/2 x 18-1/2 inches.
CONDITION: (Please review all images below as well.)
The image is crisp and heavily inked.The sheet has a number of small creases (most due to artist handling during execution); a small loss of paper and very small area of moisture stain in bottom left corner (neither intruding into the image); a pin hole beneath the signature and a tiny nibble off the end of right corner. The sheet margins also displays mild to faint foxing and light soiling.
Two color variations of this print are held at the Smithsonian National Museum of African art, part of the Wil and Irene Petty Collection of Important African Art.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Full name, Adeyinka Ajayi Adeyemi, born 1945 Iragjibi, Oshun State-Nigeria.
In 1963 Adeyemi joined the Duro Lapido National Theatre and traveled with the group to the Berlin Festival of Arts, Germany; in 1964 to The Commonwealth Festival of Arts in Britain. In 1965 he went to The Netherlands and Belgium. He was cultural assistant at the University of Ife Cultural Center 1968; participated in the World of Art Workshop organized by the German Cultural Center, Lagos, 1969. In 1970 Adeyemi also acted in the filming of Wole Soyinka's play (written in 1963), "Kongi's Harvest," and conducted an art workshop for Batiks and graphic art.
Adeyemi's exhibition records, both Solo and Group, in the U.S. and abroad, are extremely lengthy and he is represented by numerous museums worldwide, including many in the United States. There are also numerous Internet sites to view Adeyemi's works and find additional biographical data.
