A very scarce stipple engraving printed in brown and color inks by Francesco Bartolozzi, a lifetime impression. It is entitled "Hunt The Slipper" after a design by William Hamilton and published in 1787. The work (in oval with title), measures 16-38 x 14-5/8 inches. The plate-marks measure 18-1/2 x 15-1/2 inches. The sheet measures 21-7/8 x 18-7/8 inches.
The artwork is executed on a sheet of laid paper with the watermark "W King Alton Mill," a paper mill in Alton, in the East Hampshire district of England. The mill existed from the late 1400's until operations ceased in about 1909.
The ownership history of the mill is long and extensive, but the particular watermark on this sheet was used on paper produced only from 1780 to 1796 under the direction of William King, owner of the mill for those dates.
CONDITION:
An exquisite impression. The print displays superb distribution of inks, wonderful rich texture and burr that is quite vivid and can be seen without magnification. The plate-mark is very prominent even along all the edges.
The face of the paper sheet is in exceptionally fine condition. Prints of this age are very rarely found in this state of preservation. However, there are some minor paper imperfections.
The extreme outer edges of the sheet have dark tone due to touching the inside of wood frame it was once set in. A few faint spots of tone in several areas that may be bleed-through from old backing. There are also 2 thin lines of light discoloration. One is vertical from the top center, the other horizontal in the lower right side. The lines fade out as they near the plate-mark and I am at a loss as to what the cause may have been. Also, a few small handling creases in the upper mid right side that are near or at the outer edge of the decorative oval ring.
Verso, the sheet displays moderate tone and a small spot of paper loss that lies just outside the plate-mark and does not intrude into the face of the sheet. There are also a few very small areas of pock marks, or paper pulled up. There may be some type of residue from the sheet being dry-mounted at some earlier point in time, and I believe the toning and paper defects are likely the direct result of that mounting.
No holes, tears or water damage. This engraving is ready to be framed and hung in any home or gallery.
